The green wall has appeared in our interiors. Today art object, both aesthetic and practical, it allows to introduce greenery in the house, on our terraces or balconies. But do you know the origin of this creation?

Focus on the green wall

At the origin of vegetal walls or vegetated walls, there is a man: Patrick Blanc, a botanist, graduate of sciences and specialist of tropical plants in undergrowth.


Internationally known, his work at the CNRS has led him to work and collaborate with the greatest architects. It is said that it was during a trip to the rainforest that Patrick Blanc noticed that high-density plants grow without problems in humid and not very bright. He then had the idea of reproducing the tropical ecosystem to transform a vertical surface into a support for growing plants.


Patrick Blanc installed his first green wall at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris. Then in 1994, the first perennial plant wall will be made at the Chaumont-sur-Loire estate on the occasion of the international garden festival. Since then, the botanist has turned many walls and vertical supports from around the world into green walls, sowing here and there his unique creations.

Easily build a green wall

The vertical gardens have revised their format and are now adapted to the interiors of homes.


If you also want to develop your living space and integrate your living room, balcony or even kitchen a bit of greenery, build your first green wall yourself.


To do this, you need:


  • a wooden pallet in good condition
  • 2 large bags of soil
  • small annual flowers (ask us if necessary)
  • a roll of geotextile canvas
  • a wall stapler
  • staples
  • sandpaper


  1. Start by cleaning and preparing the pallet: sand the damaged parts, in case of mold, remove the damaged parts.
  2. Cover the bottom, sides and back of your pallet with the geotextile fabric. To keep the canvas in place, staple the geotextile canvas to your wood pallet using the wall stapler. Tips: Remember to stretch the geotextile fabric as much as possible so that it is as rigid as possible.
  3. Once these first two steps are complete, your wood pallet plant wall is half finished: all that remains is to integrate the plants. To do this, place the pallet on the ground, horizontally, the geotextile canvas on the ground.
  4. Fill the floors of the pallet with soil and plant the chosen flowers and plants.
  5. To finish the plant wall, let the roots grow and the plants cling to the soil. A few days is enough, then you can straighten the green wall and place it in the chosen place.


You can customize the palette according to your desires. Raw wood can be personalized and decorated: let your inspirations speak! The pallet can also be suspended or simply placed on the floor.


Finally, remember to water your plant wall regularly.
